Real Estate Sector in Bangladesh:
The population of Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, is growing ominously, with hundreds of country people migrating to the city every year. According to an estimate, about 10 million people now live in Dhaka city. This has resulted in a huge demand for housing.
In early fifties Public Works Department (PWD) developed the first Government housing complex comprising four thousand flats for the officers and staffs over an area of 150 acres of land at Motijheel and Azimpur. These are popularly known as 'Motijheel Colony' and 'Azimpur Colony'.
Real Estate business in Bangladesh (to be precise, in Dhaka) begun in the 60s.In the beginning, it was primarily concerned with developing land but later in the 70s a few companies started to build flats. Then in the 80s more developers joined in, soon to be followed by big conglomerates. The 90s witnessed a huge surge of interest in the sector. Old houses began to be demolished, in their place eye-catching flats flourishing. The construction boom in tern attracted many foreign investors in cement, steel, tiles and other building materials.
Now, Real Estate contributes about 12% to the GDP.It also employs one million skilled and unskilled people including about 5000 architects and engineers. The sector has a turnover about Taka 5 billion and it is one of the largest taxpayers in the country with a yearly contribution of Taka 500 million.
